Project overview

The construction of the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) link road has enabled the remediation and development of the former colliery at Rossington - a £56 million scheme, led by Doncaster Council and funded by the Regional Growth Fund, Harworth Estates, Peel Group, and Verdion.

The exciting mixed-use scheme will include up to 1,200 new homes, commercial buildings, food retail, a school, and a health centre.

The venture brings much needed employment opportunities to an area affected by colliery closure and poor transport links which has prevented new business growth.

Eastwood’s services

Eastwood have carried out civil and structural design, contract administration, principal designer duties, and site investigation services on this multi-phase development for over seven years.

Beginning in 2015, the primary objective was the development of a comprehensive earthworks, remediation and surface water drainage solution to facilitate the re-development of the former colliery, located within a highly industrialised area.

Innovative Solutions

As the project progressed, the team experienced numerous site-specific challenges across the highly contaminated site. It required mitigation through enhancing existing foundation techniques, complex drainage systems and sustainable design approaches, whilst also compelling the technical team to develop and implement innovative construction methodologies.

To meet strict planning guidelines beyond the specification of traditional solutions, the technical team developed a unique, durable, sustainable drainage system (SuDS) that could accommodate surface water run-off for a critical 1 in 100 year storm water flooding scenario. This was done whilst also developing a flexible solution to effectively manage unpredictable environmental conditions, resultant from climate change.

In addition, the team sought to integrate at least two treatment trains, within the surface water discharge prior to entry into Rossington Drain, to remove pollutants and mitigate contamination of the watercourse.

Dedicated resident Eastwood engineer

A dedicated Eastwood Geo-technical Engineer has been acting as the client’s geotechnical site representative for the duration of this multi-phase development, since 2017, to oversee and conduct site investigations, earthworks and remediation.

“I have enjoyed the challenges encountered throughout the phases of this project, especially working closely with the client and contractor teams. Eastwood have amassed extensive knowledge of the site which allows us to push forward the client’s vision for the regeneration scheme. I have worked closely with the Eastwood project support team to help design and implement site specific solutions for all aspects of the project"
