Project overview

The Sheffield Children’s Hospital is a Major Trauma Centre and one of only five dedicated paediatric Major Trauma Centres in England. With no existing helideck, critically ill patients admitted via helicopter were previously transported from a nearby public park, across the busy A57 and entered through the A&E department.

The project introduced a new 26m square helideck on top of an existing hospital building with a dedicated access direct into the A&E department.

The project involved constructing a new helideck on top of an existing five storey 1960s building, an extension to an existing lift tower with a control room and a link bridge between the two structures.

Eastwood’s services

Appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers from RIBA stages 2 to 5.

Engineering services:

  • Carrying out structural surveys and assessments of the existing structures
  • Design of any strengthening works
  • Design of new lift shaft/tower structure
  • Design of the interfaces between the existing building and new helideck
  • Design of the new link bridge connecting the lift tower to the new helideck
  • Provide construction stage support

Challenges and Solutions

Over 10 years in the making; the project required innovative engineering designs to help make it a reality:

  • Live, densely populated site with a live A&E department requiring 24/7 access
  • Little to no structural information for the existing 1960s building available
  • Majority of existing material information based on non-destructive testing to minimise effect on existing structure
  • Structural support locations determined by layout of existing structure
  • Complex loading introduced from helicopter vehicle
  • Significant uplift forces present between proposed and existing structures requiring innovated interface solutions
  • Economic solutions required due to project being 100% charity funded

Sustainable Solutions

  • Re-use of an existing building with fibre reinforced polymer wrap strengthening of existing structure to minimise requirements for new structures
  • An extension of an existing lift core with re-use of existing lifts to transport patients between helideck and A&E
  • Structurally efficient designs and use of material to ensure minimal weight was added to existing structures
"We are proud to be involved in such an important project. The helideck will make such a difference not only to the local community but to children across Derbyshire and Lincolnshire who require urgent medical attention”.
