Project overview

Smart Systems are the UK’s leading supplier of architectural aluminium systems. Their purpose-built site in Yatton houses their main office, warehouse and distribution base. Over the past 14 years, Smart Systems have continued to invest and expand their operation over a series of six phases (Eastwood have supported since phase 2), with the current size of their premises approximately 50,000m2.

Eastwood’s services

Our expertise on this ongoing expansion project, as a multi-disciplinary engineering firm, encompassed our full range of specialisms; civil and structural, geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering.

The Eastwood team dedicated to this project contained a mixture of engineers, technicians and geologists, responsible for site investigations, foundation design (pile caps and ground beams), floor slabs (pile-supported RC), foul drainage, surface water drainage (above-ground attenuation tanks), and external hard standing areas.

Solutions tailored to the ground conditions

The geology beneath the Yatton site consists of Quaternary Tidal Flat deposits overlying Mercia Mudstone. Initial geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigations revealed bands of very soft clay overlying the mudstone. Due to these poor ground conditions, the team designed piled foundations and piled floor slabs for each phase of the development.

The site and the surrounding area is flat, and drained by a network of interconnected drainage ditches, known locally as Rhynes. It was a requirement from the client for the discharge rate to these ditches, from the new development, to be limited to Greenfield rates (3.6l per second per hectare) to avoid overwhelming the system.

We therefore designed a surface water drainage system to collect and attenuate all surface water that runs off roofs and external hard-standings on site, before releasing it to the drainage network at a controlled rate. As a result of the challenging ground conditions and high water table, above-ground storage tanks were designed to collect water from the roofs.

The external yard areas were dished and dissected by high-capacity drainage channels, designed to 'flood' in critical storm events.

Wind turbine foundation design

“The design for the foundations of the wind turbines presented our biggest challenge. Owing to the poor ground conditions, the foundations had to be piled. The solution was to design a circular, reinforced concrete base, supported on piles, arranged in a radial formation. These piles were raked in opposing directions to transmit the vertical and lateral loads from the turbines to the underlying mudstone” Adam Lavelle, Associate, Eastwood Consulting Engineers

A dedicated resident Eastwood engineer

Given the complexity of the project, Eastwood offered a Resident Engineer to provide full-time site supervision for the duration of the construction works. We could therefore ensure the construction matched the required quality and performance as described in the drawings, specifications and other contract documents.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of the Yatton site. As a team we have had to think outside the box and work across multiple disciplines to design solutions to meet the needs of the project. It’s been a great experience working with the construction team on site; communication and team work have been crucial to the success of the build.”
