Project overview

Welcome Break's new service station has opened at Junction 33 of the M1. Spanning two sites either side of the existing motorway, it is connected via a tunnel underneath the M1. The Service Station boasts over 3400m2 of amenities for both the general public and HGV drivers, as well as petrol stations and a Starbucks drive-thru.

The project has allowed the re-development of land previously used as spoil and slag tips from the nearby Templeborough Steelworks, and acts as a flagship development for Welcome Break's modern branding.

Eastwood’s services

Eastwood were appointed as Civil and Structural Design Consultants throughout this project.

Engineering services:

  • Superstructure design including secondary steelwork
  • Foundation and underbridge design
  • Below-ground drainage plan
  • External works specifications
  • Phase 1 and 2 Site Investigation works

Challenges and Solutions

Eastwood worked closely with the wider team to ensure solutions were found to the various design challenges posed by the expansive 7-hectare site:

  • Re-graded ground levels: Across the site, existing soils were re-used to form engineered platforms of higher strength, with no excess waste material generated, or additional imported material required. ECE also proposed the use of soil nailing techniques for slope stabilisation, to reduce the amount of re-grading required.

  • Slag removal: As part of the cut and fill exercise required across the site, the existing slag material was excavated and re-deposited at depth under the hardstanding areas, in order to avoid any clashes with proposed building foundations.

  • Foundation techniques: A mixture of traditional foundation techniques and piling was used across the site, depending on the level of load resistance required.

  • Flexible design: Eastwood were able to quickly adapt to changes made to the proposed design, in order to minimise programme delays. Once such example was the addition of an additional electrical service pit once construction had already commenced.

Flagship Designs

  • Long span trusses were utilised in the main amenity building in order to provide a large open space, with views of the 'Yorkshire-village' style amenities from the mezzanine viewing platform.

  • The Team optimised the steelwork configuration, reduced material use and improved load transfer.

  • Splice connections with cover plates resulted in a seamless look to the steelwork.

Contractor Engagement

  • Eastwood conducted regular site inspections throughout the build, which enabled any issues during construction to be ironed out as they occurred.

  • Eastwood's engineers worked closely with all the multidisciplinary teams involved from procurement through to handover, in order to present a completed and cohesive design.
“The Eastwood Design Team are thrilled to have played a key role in the opening of Welcome Break's 60th service station in the UK. The complex build presented unique challenges that inspired the team to push the boundaries in engineering innovation".
